Day 12 Hazey/Smokey-ish Missoula to Helena

  • Miles today 116.7
  • Miles total 826.5
  • Elevation today 4603 ft
  • Elevation total 45606 ft
  • Weather – Smoke filled ride, like it was overcast and hazey. No wind from Missoula to 80 mile mark, the side/headwind at about 10 mph to top of climb at 100 mile mark – it was kinda ugly!
Plan for today

After a rest day we did an up an over. It was pretty close to same profile as Friday. This time the big climb started at mile 95 and ended at mile 100 with about 2800 ft in 5 miles – it’s a doozie. Then pure downhill for 10 miles (coasted down, no pedaling at about 35 mph!) and a dinker into Helena.

Big things on ride today other than haze – we had a crash – the guy from France clipped a guys wheel and went head over tea cup. Pretty banged up-fingers, wrist and knee. I think it’s a couple days in van for him. Second big thing was we were riding on busy two lane highway and on coming traffic passing into our lane – frightening!!! Last we did about 20 miles on I-90. I think we are close to a century on Interstate freeways – kinda weird!

So far so good, I got my climbing legs! I have figured out hydration and gels nutrition (as much as I can get in). I got a bike adjustment today with a shorter and more upright stem so handlebars be higher – my fingers on both hands were going numb (tough to apply brakes or shift😩). Ugly category, backside is still like a fire is burning – maybe I am causing the smoke in the air – def feels like it!!!

On to Three Forks, MT…. no rain in sight for next 10 days (did I jinx it?)!!!!
