Day 13 Wind Walls – Helena to Three RiversMT

You gotta love MT – wide open spaces!!
  • Miles today 88.4
  • Miles total 914.9
  • Elevation today 3763 ft
  • Elevation total 49369 ft
  • Weather – sunny and warm, started day in 60’s, ended in 80’s; could see thunder clouds in distance and heard a couple of boomers during ride
Plan the day – climb early!!!

This was an awesome day – the sky, the air, the scenery – spectacular!!! Plus a little brown bear cub ran across road in front us – maybe 50 yds or less. He was speedy and went for belly slide under the guard rail. Amber on top and dark brown on bottom half – no Mama bear that we could see. That was a WOW!

Back to the ride, overall 3 climbs. First one was expected to be tough. But was early so not too bad. Made it up at about 7mph, so improving from my 5.3 pace!!! However, we were in a Montane wind vortex starting at mile 52 to 60 – head wind/side wind – my speed on the flat for 6 miles and the climb for 4 miles was about 6 mph. It was a wind wall!!! I think wind was blowing constant at 15 to 20!!! It was gross – pedaling hard and going no where! Same thing happens again at mile 80 to 82. Not a fan!!!

Last thing, I get in about 3:15-3:30. During halfway thru the ride in the distance were thunder heads. Then some rumbling. By 4:15 it was dumping, temp dropped 30 degrees. I was all clean my room and 5 folks came in as drown rats – soaked to the bone and freezing. No rain in forecast! I think I jinxed it for them.

On to Bozeman…expected to be sunny and 75😎
