Hydration and Nutrition

You would think eating and drinking would be simple. You do it all the time. Riding and drinking and eating – not so easy. Also knowing when and how much when you are killing, also tough. My rules of thumb:

  • 1- 24 oz water bottle every hour. This is probably way light but it’s what I am comfortable with in the ratio of drink to having to pee.
  • Water bottle is water plus LMNT hydration/electrolyte powder. Really it’s salt, potassium and magnesium, as their slogan says, “Stay salt, my friends!” I like it ice cold!!!

Nutrition is another game entirely! You got your bars, your goo, your gummies, your chews, your blocks – it comes in all shapes and forms. This is completely personal preference on consistency, flavor and how your stomach reacts. I’ve tried everything. The best is gummies and bars. Basically you are looking for Carbs!!! So anything that will provide a way for your muscles to energized during the ride. There are a bunch brands, pick up sample packs, I used the feed.com as an easy way to try lots of brands and types. For the ride, I’m a Gummies boy. I’m using ones that are fromStratch Labs, GU and Bonk Breakers. I’m also using chews, well they are called Bloks from Clif. Lastly, bars, which provide carbs and protein, from Kate’s Real Food, Clif Bars and Picky Bars. I try to stay away from chocolate or something that will melt. When it melts, it’s awful and you get it everywhere!

For quantities – two approaches:

  • 1 bar every 90 mins
  • 1 serving of gummies, usually 3, or chews, usually 2, every 45 mins
  • Off the bike food in 3 squares a day, what ever is being served!!!
  • Plus COFFEE – a couple times during day! I LOVE coffee and hope my mates on this trip will want to stop for a pleasure stop that a coffee shop provides.

I’m sure every nutritionist is screaming at this point but hey it’s what I’m doing!

I don’t receive any comp from these places and I am far, very far, from being an influencer. Go try some stuff, be curious, it’s part of the adventure!
